This summer, The Senior Source and TXU Energy distributed new window air conditioning units to 675 seniors who lacked access to reliable sources of air conditioning in their homes, through the annual Beat the Heat program.

At least 334 people in Texas died from heat in 2023, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The mission of Beat the Heat is to help mitigate the risk of heat related health—and quality of life—issues for older adults in the Dallas area.

These air conditioners were purchased through a generous $30,000 donation from TXU Energy’s signature Beat the Heat program and through contributions from other corporations, foundations, and individuals throughout the Dallas community. The goal of Beat the Heat is to ensure local older adults have consistent cool air in their homes during the long Texas summer.

“Our body’s ability to respond to heat decreases with age,” said Stacey Malcolmson, CEO of The Senior Source. “For a senior who does not have a way to effectively cool their home, summer temperatures in Texas can put them at risk for a number of serious heat related illnesses.”  These events also provided a great opportunity for seniors to learn more about the many resources The Senior Source provides including free technology classes, support for caregivers, senior employment services and a host of volunteer opportunities to help older adults stay active and connected to their community.
