Older Adults Helping Others

Through volunteer opportunities at The Senior Source, active older adults become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skills and expertise to community projects and organizations. Our volunteers receive guidance and training so they can make a contribution that suits their talents, interests, and availability.

RSVP – Retired Seniors Volunteer Program

Founder of the Gray Panthers, Maggie Kuhn, once observed, “It is a shame to know all of the answers, when no one bothers to ask you the questions.”

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) makes sure someone is asking the questions of the numerous older volunteers in our community.

Working with almost 200 nonprofit agencies in Dallas and Collin counties, RSVP is the clearinghouse for people age 55 and over who are looking for volunteer opportunities.  Whether it is serving as a tutor, staffing a special event, providing consumer mediation, educating seniors about Medicare fraud, or nurturing a community garden, close to 2,000 RSVP volunteers are utilizing the skills they have developed during a lifetime to make our communities a better place for all — both young and old.

Volunteers may join RSVP as individuals or with a group. In addition to helping area organizations by sharing your talents, RSVP volunteers receive free supplemental accident and personal liability and excess auto liability insurance while volunteering through our program.

Be A Foster Grandparent!

Children with exceptional needs benefit from the warmth, kindness and attention of Foster Grandparent volunteers who are paired with special needs children at hospitals, homeless shelters, Head Start Centers, and special care facilities.

Foster Grandparents provide assistance in a number of areas including:

  • Education  – Reading, math, writing
  • Socialization –  Listening, talking, mentoring
  • Personal Care – Rocking, nurturing, holding and feeding

While the children receive the love of an older adult, the lives of the grandparents are enriched by a sense of being needed. But their major benefit is being the recipients of that special love and attention that only a child can give.

The Foster Grandparent Program is open to individuals age 55+ years.  Foster Grandparents receive ongoing training and supervision, in addition to a stipend for low-income older adults.  All grandparents serve 15-40 hours a week.  An application, references, interview and criminal background check are required of all Foster Grandparent volunteers.

Senior Companions

Most older adults want to live out their years in their own homes. For many, the Senior Companion Program makes this simple dream a reality.

Volunteer  Senior Companions serve in the homes of one or two frail elderly clients providing assistance with light housekeeping and meal preparation and accompanying them to doctor or medical appointments or to recreational and social events.

Other areas of assistance include:

  • Socialization – Talking and listening; offering peer counseling.
  • Support care – Accessing community services; assisting with respite care.
  • Personal care – Assisting with grooming, eating and exercising.

Selected community organizations, such as the Methodist Health System, Parkland Memorial Hospital and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, refer clients who need a companion to the Senior Companion Program.

The Senior Companion Program is open to individuals age 55+ years. Senior Companions receive ongoing training and supervision, in addition to a stipend for low-income older adults. All companions serve 15-40 hours per week.

The frail elderly clients are not the only ones to benefit. The volunteer Companions, older adults themselves, are provided the opportunity to stay healthy and active while helping others.
